Sunday in the City

This morning we went to the Dupont farmers' market. Sandwiched between the starchy root vegetables and leftover apple cider of winter and the bounty of summer is the early May farmers' market. We found lots of leafy greens including arugula, rainbow chard, collards, and redbor and greenbor kale; there were also herbs including sage, oregano, flowering chives, garlic scapes (a harbinger of spring produce), as well as purple asparagus. The vine-ripened tomatoes are making their appearance nestled between mounds of Persian cucumbers, but strawberries and deep red rhubarb have yet to grace the stalls with their presence. We passed on honey from Pennsylvania and West Virginia, hoping for something more local (within 30 miles of us) but didn't find any.
